CAPS 2012 Conference

Canadian Association of Planning Students 2012 Conference and AGM – PLANNING HORIZONS: The Edge, Future, and Potential of Planning
Vancouver, British Columbia - Simon Fraser University’s Downtown Campus, Harbour Centre
515 West Hastings Street
February 2nd – 4th, 2012

The CAPS 2012 Annual Conference and AGM will bring together students from across Canada in the beautiful urban laboratory of Vancouver. SFU’s striking and historic Downtown campus adheres to the highest standards of a professional learning space, making it the perfect venue for CAPS 2012. It is located in the heart of Vancouver, a city recognized internationally for its livability and commitment to continual improvement, including the current ‘Greenest City 2020’ campaign.

This three-day conference explores The Edge, Future, and Potential of Planning by inviting our delegates and presenters to focus on the following four sub-themes of urban, regional, and resource planning in Canada:

  • Inspiring Potential: Perspectives on what is exciting about planning today and in the future
  • Championing Creativity: Strategies for generating innovation and leadership in planning
  • Finding Voices: Communication and engagement with diverse communities and disciplines
  • Widening Our Lens: Extending conventional boundaries of planning

Planning students are cordially invited to join us in February to take in and discuss planning perspectives of emerging planning professionals and directly experience innovative planning initiatives in and around Vancouver. The conference will provide students with the opportunity to give oral or poster presentations, explore Metro Vancouver on a variety of mobile tours, as well as network with planning students, faculty, and professionals from across Canada and the Pacific Northwest. Prizes will be awarded to those students recognized by their peers as giving the top presentations. Our professional development sessions will also provide hands-on, practical planning skills as students prepare for their careers as planners. The conference also features prominent keynote presentations by:

  • Larry Beasley (FCIP & Distinguished Practice Professor of Planning, University of British Columbia);
  • Julian Agyeman (FRSA & Chair, Department of Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning, Tufts University); and
  • Gordon Price (Director, The City Program, Simon Fraser University).
